Hourly vs fixed — which should you accept?
Where surveyors charge time, expect £60–£150 per hour depending on seniority and region. But for defined jobs — surveys, reports, schedules — fixed fees win for consumers: the scope is known, so the price should be too. Hourly billing is legitimate for open-ended work (dispute negotiation, project monitoring); on anything else, ask why the fee can't be fixed.
What's included — and the extras to check
A fair quote includes the inspection, the written report, and a follow-up call. Check before instructing: is VAT included? Travel? Re-inspection if access fails? A surveyor call to discuss findings (ours is included — some firms charge)? The cheapest headline number with three extras usually loses to an honest fixed fee.
Regional variation
